What's new at Institute of Mosaic Art! IMA Blog. News. Updates. Special Events. Announcements.
November 22, Friday 6:00p - 8:00p
Come welcome three teenage artist super stars from Haiti visiting the United States for the first time! Mosaic artists Fedno Lubin and Michou Joissant, joined by Haitian photographer Jepte Milfort, are part of a group of youth who started creating mosaics in Haiti with Laurel True after the devastating earthquake in 2010. They have since helped make over 25 murals in their town and gained international support for their work. Their story will fill your heart with inspiration.
There will be a conversation with the young artists, a photo exhibit, music by Rosemond Joissant - winner of Haiti’s American Idol, beautiful hand made crafts created by Haitian youth available to purchase, and light refreshments.
We'd like to send the artists home with a collage of mosaics by IMA friends to share with their community, and for inspiration. So please bring a photo of your artwork to add to the collage!
Michael Kruzich's "Horses of Neptune" and many other exceptional works are on display in our gallery. Watch this video about the making of "Horses" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbthjUbV2lk&feature=em-upload_owner and come to meet Michael in person this Friday between 6:00-8:00 pm.

We had so much fun at the Re-Opening Party last August 18th! Friends traveled from all over to celebrate with us. There was a packed house, great music and delicious food. Here are a few snapshots from the day:
We hope you can make it!
Enjoy working in IMA's new beautiful studio space for free this summer. We have a lot of space to work, a fun, creative atmosphere, a library full of mosaic books and fantastic mosaic art hanging for inspiration. Stay for an hour or the whole day! Studio Use includes use of IMAs space, mosaic tools, adhesives, design tools and more. Our Studio Use program is available to all those with previous mosaic experience and is typically offered in Day or Month passes.
Students in our new Mosaic 101 class have caught the mosaic bug and created some fantastic first time artworks! We had a full class of 13 students Saturday and explored the history of mosaics, contemporary approaches, and had a smorgasbord of materials to chose from. With glue still drying we're ready for more. Now the sky's the limit!

Keeping it fresh at IMA! We have some new classes that have never been taught before at IMA. They range from beginning to advanced levels and cover topics such Classical Smalti, glass fusing, mosaic Saints or Angels in polymer clay, and creating your very own alter ego mosaic. Click the images below for more information on each class.
IMA opened in our new location this weekend with a full Exterior and Garden Applications class being taught by Rachel Rodi. It is quite an energetic and lively group! We are digging in deep with tons of info and the students are making great projects! Most students are new to mosaics and are working with hard, exterior grade tile, which is not an easy task. Great job!
Here's some pictures of our new place in action.
A HUGE thank you to all the people who came out to help paint!! We could not do this without you!
COME PAINT WITH US ON JUNE 23
We have some white walls that need a splash of color. If you are in the Bay Area, and have a few free hours on Sunday, June 23rd, we would love and appreciate your help with a bit of painting. It's a chance to get a first look at the space, catch up with the awesome IMA community, and get IMA ready for a new chapter.
Music, Food and Fun Community provided.
Painting Party details:
Sunday, June 23rd
805 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA
Food and drink to be provided
Now that Chapman Street facilities and the store are closed for good, we are sure that many folks in the IMA community are feeling the loss and wondering when the store will be re-stocked and the new facilities will be open. We want to keep you up to date on our progress, as well a few ways you might be able to get involved in the process.
Currently we are working on adding some partition walls, resurfacing the concrete floors, installing sinks in the classrooms and improving the lighting at the new location. Once those items are done we’ll be inviting all of you to help us bring some color into the space at painting parties. Stay tuned for dates and times . . .we’ll have food and beverages for volunteers and are looking forward to the opportunity for everyone to see the new space and help make it home to IMA.
We intend to expand the store inventory and are interested in what materials you would like to see us carry. We can’t promise to fulfill everyone’s wishes but will do our best to have a good supply of quality materials and tools on hand for your projects. While we plan to stock up for opening, the assortment we carry will continue to expand over the next several months. If you have special wishes, favorite items, etc., we would love to hear from you—you can e-mail email@example.com orSophia@instituteofmosaicart.com.
We have pretty full calendar of classes through early November including Visiting Artists

We also have Glass Garden Sphere, Mosaic Portraiture, a Community Mosaic project at Markham Elementary School, and a brand new six week evening class Self Portrait/Alter Ego (see description below).
For our first exhibit we’d like to feature YOUR work . . .we’ll be sending out more information on this shortly but in the meanwhile go make something fabulous to hang or display in our first show!!!
