IMA's Weekly Mosaic Workout Challenge

Institute of Mosaic Art's Weekly Mosaic Workout Challenge. We are challenging ourselves, and whoever wants to join us, to make a mosaic every week from June 6th to November 6th, 2014.

Keep Going

If you're going through hell, keep going. --Winston Churchill

Have you finished your Week 1 mosaic yet? For anyone wishing to submit, it's due tomorrow. Mine is still in progress.  I'm out of town this week and working on it in 20 minute increments.  I'm not loving it but soldiering on and making note of what I'd do differently in the future (e.g. don't try to do this while traveling!)

I'll post our results by the end of the weekend (when I'm back home). In the meantime, see below for your next workout.

Workout Week 2 - Switcheroo

This week's workout is another materials focused one.  If you look at your past work and see lots of ceramic tile, try doing something with stained glass.  If you are a glass person, start breaking some tile.

If your mosaics are equally balanced, kick it up a notch and use either material but no nippers...

You have until June 21st.

About materials...

I know that not everyone has access to a mosaic supply store and/or school so getting materials might be a bit more challenging than it is for us! Here are a couple suggestions.

If there are any tile shops in your area, you can ask if they have any old samples they're getting rid of - sometimes they have some sweet finds and they are happy to give them to you for free!

Another option is stained glass shops. There's one I used to go to that has a bin of pieces that are too small for stained glass but perfectly suitable for mosaics and relatively inexpensive.

Though this project is not at all about pimping IMA/MSS products, we do have a bunch of pretty cheap grab bags of vitreous, stained glass, ceramic tile... They aren't on the website but if you give us a call (510.898.1174) we can definitely help you get what you need!
