Learn how to create permanent mosaics that are safe, durable, beautiful and pass the scrutiny of the most discerning eye. This is an essential class for those moving into permanent exterior mosaics, architectural projects, or professional commissioned work.
Class begins with a digital presentation of professional work, focusing on detail shots of different cutting, fitting, sawing and shaping techniques and how they fit into a large scale context. Students learn how to refine their mosaic designs and craftsmanship. Lecture and demonstration include information on layout considerations for large scale mosaics, diversifying tile shapes and lay-patterns, and cutting, shaping and precision fitting with exterior grade ceramic tile. Professional grade adhesives are discussed as well as grouting techniques to enhance precision setting and mixed media.
How to use tools for precision setting are demonstrated including: tile strippers, breaking tools, water saws, and ceramic tile hand tools. Utilizing these techniques, students create a pattern to work from, or use one provided, to create a professional sample board or piece for the wall to take home.
Please note:
~ Students must know fundamental mosaic setting techniques and how to use ceramic tile nippers.
~ Exterior grade tile is used during class which is harder to cut than many materials. Use of Starrett nippers is strongly advised if student has trouble with repetitive stress injuries, arthritis, or has trouble nipping high fire tile.
