Geometric patterns are the cornerstone of Roman decoration, and prove a fascinating study of the inventiveness and imagination of the early mosaic artists.
In this unique workshop students will choose from a wide variety of ancient mosaic designs to recreate their own patterns in a rich palette of marble and stone tiles.
The course is based on working with the square grid, and covers symmetry and order, changing color ways, how to draw and count out linear borders, and how to "grow" them into overall patterns for use in floors, bathrooms, kitchens or picture frames. It is astounding the variety of designs that can be created from the simple grid once there is understanding of the underlying structure.
Lillian demonstrates cutting techniques with hammer & hardie and nippers and students may practice working with these tools, but there is no cutting required to complete the exercises.
Students will take home at least two finished, grouted studies. We will be working with marble tile tesserae using thinset on cement board. Sealing and grouting takes place on the second day.
Lillian's enthusiasm for mosaic history is contagious; as she lectures about little known aspects of the Roman mosaic workshops and ties it together with a terrific slide show on the ancient baths and mosaic floor decoration. Lots of useful visual resources, materials and handouts are provided.
Think of the weekend as your Roman Holiday and come away with a new perspective on the ancient medium of mosaics.
