If you love mosaics and mixed media, you will love our Renegade Quilting class!
In the tradition of Gee's Bend and other non-European quilters, Renegade Quilter and Mixed Media artist extraordinaire Madeline Behrens Brigham will lead students on an exploratory journey through the creation of an intuitively pieced and stitched quilt.
No sewing or art experience is necessary in this course, only the desire to explore piecework and create a work of art that is personal.
Instructor encourages students to bring in scraps of fabric that are meaningful to them to use in their projects - scraps or articles of clothing and trims - trading is encouraged!
Instructor will have mountains of fabulous fabric scraps for students to use for their quilts as well as trims, ribbons, and other special findings.
Renegade (or non- traditional) Quilting uses recycled fabrics; often from worn-out clothing, to express a story. Different hand sewing techniques will be chosen for individual pieces. Crazy quilt, applique and other forms of embellishment will be shown and used as needed in addition to embroidery stitches including top embroidery and other means of finishing. Edging ideas will be discussed as well.
If you've done traditional patchwork/piecing quilts, come prepared for a relaxing diversion. "There are no rules here, straight lines need not appear. Our only guide will be the size of quilt students choose. "
Students will create a small quilt, approximately 24 " x 32" or thereabouts to take home. Instructor will also offer options for using the completed piece; using it as a building block to a larger blanket quilt, making a pillow, a wall hanging and/or a bag or jacket back.
This is the beginning class in "soft" mosaic work. Come have some fun with fabric!
