This hands-on course will introduce students to Kelley's signature "extreme sport" glass-on-glass mosaic techniques: Flat Stacking, in which stained glass is built up in multiple layers over mirror to create a luminous diffusion of light and a 3-D foreground/background effect; and Edge Stacking, in which clear, opaque, and translucent stained glass strips of varying heights/lengths are stacked on edge either singly or in series so that the wavy and often beautifully striated riven edge is the visual focus.
The Friday evening session will be a slideshow/lecture/discussion deconstructing the stacking process and giving an overview of stacking theory. Saturday morning will begin with a detailed cutting/construction demo, then with guided instruction students will create a combination grouted and ungrouted 12" x 12" mosaic for indoor display that incorporates these techniques. Students will also learn how to use SpectraLock epoxy grout in a hands-on demo, and will take home grout for their projects.
Instructor will also cover designing for stacking techniques, mixing these techniques with other media, and appropriate adhesives, tools, and applications.
Students are welcome to supplement their materials by bringing glass from their own inventory or by utilizing their student discount to purchase items in Mosaic Studio Supply.
Students should bring a sharpie and exacto knife to class.
