Join Institute of Mosaic Art in welcoming Visiting Artist Margo Anton from Edmonton, Canada. Come learn the "ins and outs" of mosaic making on a small scale. This hands-on course will acquaint the student with the same joys and challenges that Margo faces daily during her well-known "Mosaic a Day" project.
The first day lecture of this exciting 3-day intensive course will include discussion about the many benefits to an artist of working small, and why it should be a part of every artist's ongoing practice. Next Margo will discuss different types of materials that can be used, some of which may be new to students, or may have never been considered for use in a mosaic. Design considerations are different for small mosaics than for larger ones, and this topic will also be thoroughly covered.
Thinset is Margo's adhesive of choice, and she will demonstrate the variety of ways she uses thinset to create her mosaic a day pieces. Students will learn about coloring thinset, the various textures of thinset, and a variety of ways of application. The instructor will also cover the use of a variety of different materials together in a mosaic, the satisfactory mixing of incongruous materials, and the best ways of "finishing" a small mosaic.
Students will create 3 mosaics — one per day — using the design concepts they have learned.
By listening to the materials, thinking outside the box, and utilizing focal points, students will learn about how to execute small- scale mosaics to great effect. Students will have 3 different sizes of substrates to work with, each of which presents different design challenges. Participants will bring their own tesserae, and are encouraged to bring the unusual items from their studio that they don't know what to do with, tesserae that they have that they have never used, and a selection of their usual tesserae. Trading of these items will be encouraged, but not mandatory.
This workshop is perfect for those who want to explore small scale or rapid process mosaic making, needing a nudge to get back into the studio, those interested in trying new materials, or those looking to expand their creative expression thru the medium of mosaic.
