Instructors have years of experience in the field of professional mosaics working through True Mosaic Studio, Inc. True Mosaics Studio specializes in large-scale commissioned projects, architectural and public project as well as community mosaics. Precision setting is required when doing large scale and public work to ensure a professional look, safety and durability of a piece.

In this new class at IMA, students will learn setting techniques as used in True Mosaics Studio, working with high- fire ceramic tile in this unique class geared towards students who want to take their setting, cutting and fitting skills to the next level and/ or are moving towards doing professional commissioned work, architectural projects or public art.

Professional work calls for precision setting and in this class, students will focus on refining setting techniques so their finished work will pass the scrutiny of the most discerning client.

Class will begin with a digital presentation of professional work focusing on detail shots of different projects utilizing different cutting, fitting, sawing and shaping techniques and how they fit into a large scale context. Lecture and demonstration will include information on pattern making/ cartooning, coding drawings and other pre- planning techniques, processing exterior- grade ceramic tile, cutting, shaping refining techniques as well as precision fitting. Ways to deal with mixed media will also be discussed as well as on and off site production of work.

Professional grade adhesives will be discussed as well as grouting techniques to enhance precision setting. Students will create a pattern to work from, or use one provided to create a sample board or piece for the wall to take home.

The various uses of all available tools for ceramic tile will be demonstrated and suggestions given for their best use in precision setting, including: tile strippers, breaking tools, water saws and more

Students should bring some of their own tools, including:
Flat or rotary nippers for tile (8")
Micro cutter
Tile stone
Tools should be in good or new condition

Starrett nippers or Platinum nippers are strongly suggested for students who have trouble with repetitive stress injuries, arthritis or have trouble nipping high-fire tile. (All tools are available at Mosaic Studio Supply on site at IMA)
