In this multi-level course students will be guided through a glass mosaic project appropriate for their skill level. Instructor
Tracy Broback will work with each student to select/ design a project that is challenging and enjoyable for them. Students will be guided through individual projects of their own design, or may select a design from IMA resources.
A broad range of cutting and shaping tools for glass will be demonstrated including scoring tools, breakers and pliers as well as more intermediate tools such as grinders and lens/ circle cutters.
Instructor will present lecture and demonstration of basic setting styles for glass mosaic tesserae as well as more sophisticated lay patterning for continuing students. Design considerations will be presented including attention to color, texture and media. Design transfer and photo simplification techniques will be demonstrated.
A broad range of glass media will also be presented and discussed, to give students an idea of how to combine different types of glass into one piece and how to best deal with different size and thickness of tesserae. Materials presented in lecture will include vitreous and stained glass, smalti, mirror, and specialty glass tesserae.
Class will focus on finer setting techniques that will allow students to add dimension and sophistication to their work. Last session may be dedicated to grouting. Some homework will be required.
Students will design and execute a glass mosaic for interior or exterior use on a substrate of their choice using one or more glass media. Square (14" x 14") or rectangular (12' x 16') substrate provided. Students using provided substrates should indicate interior or exterior before the first day of class. Students may bring their own substrate/ form to mosaic.
Continuing students may bring their own glass cutting tools, or tools will be provided.
Limit 8 students.
