Visiting Instructor Lillian Sizemore shares her enthusiasm for ancient
mosaics with this foundation course that introduces the basic building
blocks of traditional mosaic setting techniques using marble and
stone, with no cutting required.
Beginning with the language of mosaic decoration and technique, the
lecture covers classical setting styles known as "opus", identifying
styles, a peek inside the ancient mosaic workshops and how mosaics
were made in Roman times. Lillian brings it all together with a
digital presentation of mosaics from her international travels.
Students will complete a mind-blowing geometric pattern using the
direct technique to create a 12 x 12 in. un-grouted study. Explore the
unlimited possibilities for designs informed by actual ancient mosaic
patterns. Designs available to copy or create your own.
Lillian shares tips for successfully working with stone and a rich
palette of marble and stone is provided to each student to complete
their project. Instructor will demonstrate cutting techniques with
hammer & hardie and various tile nippers and students will practice
working with these tools. Sealers, wet and dry-grouting techniques are
discussed as options for finishing stone projects. Handouts are
provided.
All materials and tools will be furnished. Students are welcome to
bring additional material and personal tools.
The class will appeal to those who have an interest in archeological
travel, the Classics, and Greek and Roman mosaics. This class is an
excellent primer for Ancient Meets Modern, which covers this topic in
more depth.
