INDIRECT TECHNIQUES FOR MOSAIC

A wonderful introduction to the indirect method of setting mosaic, taught by mosaic maser Dmitry Grudsky.

This course is designed for both beginning mosaic students and for continuing students who are interested in the reverse, or indirect method. This method allows mosaic to be made in reverse ad then set into a bed of adhesive, allowing for a totally flat and smooth surface.

Under the instructor's supervision, students will have an opportunity to explore a variety of materials, such as glass, porcelain and stone. Using the indirect method, students will learn how to cut and place tiles, setting their tessreae in reverse. Instructor will present the of concept of andamento (flow) and guide students in different setting styles.

Class discussions will include use of appropriate substrates, adhesives and grout.

At the end of the session, instructor will demonstrate how to flip the completed mosaic into a prepared mortar bed. Instrucotr will demonstrate grouting techniques and students will grout their pieces at home.

Students will complete a small mosaic in class to take home.
